Shear Plates and Split Rings are used in bolted connections to engage a larger volume of wood, and achieve much higher capacities than bolts alone.
Shear Plates are installed flush into the surface of a timber, and can be used with either a steel side plate, or a wood side plate with a mating shear plate. They are available in two diameters: 102mm (for use with 19mm and 21mm bolts) and 67mm (for use with 19mm dia. bolts).
Split Rings are set into a groove between wood members, so that one half of its depth is in each side. They are available in two diameters: 102mm (for use with 19mm bolts) and 64mm (for use with 13mm dia. bolts).
The specialized tools to create the daps and grooves for each connector are also available for purchase or rental.
Design provisions for Shear Plates and Split Rings are provided in CAN/CSA O86.1 Engineering Design in Wood (Clause 10.3), and the National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction.
